Hard Hits: Concussion and the Modern Athlete

A UNC Charlotte panel discussion titled “Hard Hits: Concussions and the Modern Athlete” will consider emerging research on sports-related concussions, in the latest offering in the “Sports in the New South: Culture, Color and Cash” series.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 6:00 PM at UNC Charlotte Center City, 320 E. 9thStreet, presented by the Center for the Study of the New South in collaboration with the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics at UNC Charlotte.

Seating for this free event is limited. RSVPs are required to CLAS-Event@uncc.edu or 704-687-0082. A reception will immediately follow the discussion. Complimentary parking will be available at 319 E. 9th Street and 422 E. 9th Street lots, across 9th Street and Brevard Street from the UNC Charlotte Center City building, where attendants will direct guests.

The panelists are:

  • Dr. Eric Wikstrom, Co-Director, Biodynamics Research Lab, UNC Charlotte Department of Kinesiology, College of Health and Human Services
  • Dr. Tricia Turner, Associate Professor/Athletic Training Program Coordinator, UNC Charlotte Department of Kinesiology, College of Health and Human Services
  • Bret Wood, Lecturer/Clinical Education Coordinator, Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program, UNC Charlotte Department of Kinesiology, College of Health and Human Services

The event marks the final program in the year-long “Sports in the New South: Culture, Color and Cash” series. The Center for the Study of the New South’s focus for 2014 will be food and southern culture. From culinary traditions and variations, to the politics and economics of food production and distribution, to the history of race in southern kitchens, the programming will not only celebrate but will also analyze the South’s relationship to the ultimate life source.

The Center for the Study of the New South in UNC Charlotte’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences promotes discourse and dialogue on a rich and diverse constellation of topics and ideas relating to the New South. Known as the period of regional history from the end of the Civil War to the modern era, the New South offers a bold tapestry of history, culture, social movements, and political issues ripe for reflection and study.
